Objective:
SmartEnCity aim to develop an adaptable and replicable systemic approach towards an urban transition into sustainable, smart and resource-efficient cities in Europe.
Results and perspectives:
The name SmartEnCity refers to an approach for cities to become ‘Smart Zero Carbon Cities’, where
- City carbon footprint and energy demand are kept to a minimum through use of demand control technologies that save energy and promote awareness
- Energy supply is entirely renewable and clean
- Local energy resources are intelligently managed by citizens, as well as coordinated by public and private stakeholders.
This approach will be defined in detail, laid out and implemented in the three Lighthouse demonstrators (Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain, Tartu in Estonia and Sonderborg in Denmark). The three cities will develop a number of demonstration actions aimed to:
- Reduce energy demand of existing residential building stock through cost-effective low energy retrofitting actions at district scale.
- Increase RES share of energy supply, through extensive leveraging of local potentials.
- Enhance clean energy in urban mobility for citizens and goods, by means of extensive deployment of green vehicles and infrastructure.
- Use ICT to achieve integration and consistency in implementation of demonstration actions and to secure involvement of citizens.
Actions will be aligned to city-specific Integrated Urban Plans (IUPs), and the process will be replicated in two Follower cities: Lecce, (Italy), and Asenovgrad (Bulgaria).
Additionally, a SmartEnCity Network will be set up to support project replication at European scale.
Key PlanEnergi activities:
PlanEnergi participate as part of the team responsible for developing demonstrations actions in Sonderborg (WP5), with key activities linked to analyzing potential for large-scale heat pump in the district heating system, developing integrated infrastructure actions, and setting up a diagnosis and baseline for Sonderborg.
Furthermore, PlanEnergi contributes to the development of a common approach across the participating cities with key activities linked to analyzing barriers for demonstration actions (WP2), monitoring and evaluation of effects (WP7) and developing a network of cities interested in replicating the approach (WP8).
