PlanEnergi has been and is involved in a number of tasks under the IEA SHC Programme. You can read more about our role in a number of tasks below.
IEA SHC Task 45: Large Solar Heating/Cooling Systems, Seasonal Storage, Heat Pumps
Project Period
01/2011 – 12/2014
Objective
The main objective of this Task was to assist in a strong and sustainable market development of large solar district heating and cooling systems.
This was done by:
- exchange of knowledge on international level (participants from North America, Europe and Asia)
- elaboration of guidelines in inputs for standards
Results and Perspectives
The main results are published in “Fact Sheets” – see the homepage of the programme.
Key PlanEnergi Activities
PlanEnergi was Operating Agent (co-ordinator) of the task and elaborated a number of the fact sheets, e.g. the fact sheet Seasonal Pit Heat Storages – Guidelines for Materials & Construction:

IEA SHC Task 52: Solar Heat and Energy Economics in Urban Environments
Project Period
01/2014 – 12/2017
Objective
This Task focused on the analysis of the future role of solar thermal (ST) in energy supply systems in urban environments. This includes energy economic analysis as well as good examples of the integration of ST systems in urban energy systems.
Results and Perspectives
Several case studies, a categorisation of ST systems, future energy system scenarios and an analysis of the space required and available for large-scale ST was developed. All reports can be found at task52.iea-shc.org/publications.

Key PlanEnergi activities
The main outcome by PlanEnergi was the analysis of potentials for large-scale solar district heating across 22 countries as described in the report “Solar District Heating Trends and Possibilities – Characteristics of Ground-Mounted Systems for Screening of Land Use Requirements and Feasibility“.

IEA SHC Task 55: Integrating Large SHC Systems into DHC Networks
Project Period
09/2016 – 08/2020
Objective
This Task aims to develop technical and economic requirements for the commercial market introduction of solar district heating and cooling (DHC) for a broad range of countries. The activities aim to improve technological know-how, market know-how and understanding of the boundary conditions as well as to provide expert know-how for project initiation and implementation and for training.
A key element will be the direct cooperation of SDH experts with associations and companies in the district heating sector to bridge the gap between these sectors.
Results and Perspectives
Results so far are published at task55.iea-shc.org/publications – also new “Fact Sheet” are planned: task55.iea-shc.org/fact-sheets.
Key PlanEnergi activities
PlanEnergi is leader of Subtask C “Design of the Solar Thermal System and of Hybrid Technologies” – and participant in Subtask B “Components testing, system monitoring and quality assurance” – working here especially on a standard for performance check of large collector fields.
